How to choose your swimsuit size for women?
Choosing the right swimsuit size is essential to feeling comfortable, free to move, and confident all summer long.
But that's not all: a swimsuit that fits you perfectly will enhance your figure without constricting it, allowing you to fully enjoy your time in the sun or by the sea.
At Nénés, every women's swimsuit we design is created to combine style and comfort, while also committing to nature through eco-responsible manufacturing for each of our pieces.
Here are the key criteria to know so you don't choose the wrong size when selecting your swimsuit!
How to take your measurements accurately?
First and foremost, it's important to measure your body correctly. Take a tape measure and record your bust, underbust, and hip measurements.
- For your bust measurement, place the tape measure horizontally around the fullest part of your bust, across the nipples. Make sure the tape is flat across your back, without being too tight or too loose.
- For your underbust measurement, measure just below your bust, where your bra band normally sits. This measurement is particularly important for swimsuits with support.
- For your hip measurement, measure the widest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor.
These measurements provide a reliable basis for referring to the swimsuit brand's size guide, regardless of the website you are on. At Nénés, it is available on each product.
Each brand indeed has its own standards, hence the importance of not relying solely on your usual ready-to-wear size. Also note that your measurements can change over time: remember to take them regularly, especially if you haven't bought a swimsuit in several
seasons.
How to choose the right size for a one-piece swimsuit?
The one-piece swimsuit requires special attention because it encompasses the entire torso. Torso length is therefore a crucial criterion.
A swimsuit that is too small will pull on the shoulders, while one that is too large will lack support.
When a one-piece swimsuit is your size, the fabric should hug your body without creating creases or tension. At the bust level, you should have neither overflow nor empty space.
Its straps should stay firmly in place without slipping or "digging into" your shoulders. Finally, the crotch should neither pull upwards nor be loose.
Opt for a cut that hugs the body without compressing it. The flexible and shaping materials we use at Nénés offer a good compromise between support and comfort.
If you are tall (over 1m70), be aware that some models may be too short in the torso: in this case, do not hesitate to take a size up or choose cuts specially designed for slender body types.
How to choose the right size for a 2-piece swimsuit?
With a two-piece swimsuit, the advantage is being able to adjust each element separately.
Are your measurements different between your top and bottom? That's completely normal, and that's precisely why a two-piece offers an ideal solution.
For the swimsuit top, refer to your usual bra size. The top should provide good support without creating marks, whether it has underwire or not. Adjustable straps found on some models are also a real plus for adjusting the fit according to your activities. Check that the band (the part that goes under the chest) remains horizontal in the back: if it rides up, the size is too large.
The swimsuit bottom, meanwhile, should stay in place without feeling tight. Check the elasticity at the waist and thighs to avoid any discomfort, especially after a swim. The elastic should not mark the skin or create a bulging effect, but it must be snug enough not to slip when the fabric is wet.
A little tip: a wet swimsuit tends to stretch slightly. So, it's better if it fits well when dry.
Is your swimsuit the right size? The tell-tale signs
Here are some simple guidelines to determine if your swimsuit fits perfectly:
What are the signs of a swimsuit that is too small?
- The fabric pulls your skin and creates horizontal folds;
- The straps cut into your shoulders or dig into your skin;
- You feel uncomfortable compression;
- The elastic leaves deep marks on your skin;
- You have trouble breathing normally;
- Your bust overflows the cups.
What are the signs of a swimsuit that is too large?
- The fabric bunches or is loose around the bust;
- The band (under the bust) rides up your back;
- The bottom slips or twists while swimming;
- The straps constantly fall off your shoulders;
- You need to constantly readjust the swimsuit;
- The fabric floats and doesn't follow your body's movements.
What are the signs of a swimsuit that is the right size?
- You feel supported without being compressed;
- The swimsuit stays in place when you move;
- No red marks remain after taking off the swimsuit;
- You can raise your arms without the bottom riding up;
- Your bust is well contained without overflowing;
- You feel confident and free to move.
The best way to choose the perfect size: try on and adjust your swimsuit if necessary!
When trying it on, move, raise your arms, sit down, lean forward... A swimsuit is not worn statically! A swimsuit tailored for you should remain comfortable in all positions.
Additional tip: don't hesitate to simulate movements you would actually make: entering the water, swimming a few strokes, getting out of the water, and lying down. It's during these movements that you'll detect any potential fit issues.
If you're torn between two sizes, refer to the brand's advice and always prioritize comfort.
When in doubt, here's a simple rule: if it's for occasional use (tanning, relaxing), take the most comfortable size. If it's for active swimming, opt for the size that offers the best support, even if it feels slightly tighter.
At Nénés, every detail is designed so that the swimsuit accompanies the body, and not the other way around.
